Greenwood United Church of Christ held a celebration in honor of their 150th anniversary on July 20, 2024. The time of greeting and registration began at 10 a.m. that sunny Saturday morning. A large white tent topped with American flags flying proudly was erected to encompass the table settings, raffle items, lots of good food and all the attendees.

Once all were greeted and given name tags, a worship service was held in the church. The organ/piano prelude was played by Ellen Richard, Blaire Zimmer and Leah Zimmer. Roger Schwarze welcomed all and reported the announcements. Special music during the service included “Hallelujah! Praise Ye the Lord” and “Amazing Grace” by Blaire and Leah Zimmer; “Great is Thy Faithfulness” by Hannah Christenson and Clark and Michaela Delzer; “In the Garden” by Emily and Gary Pratt; and “The Little Brown Church in the Vale” by the all-church choir and accompanist Paul Christenson. Ronald Meinhardt played the organ for the prelude.

Several members and former pastors took part in the worship service. Lois Timmler read from The 50th Anniversary of the Current Church Building entitled “Our Church Immanuel.” Pastor Mark Schwinn (2003-2013) read the scripture readings. Pastor Asafa Rajaofera (2013-2023) gave the message, “Past, Present and Future – 150 years,” led the closing prayers and the table prayer. Rev. Michael Jones (current pastor) gave the pastoral prayer, led the Lord’s Prayer and read the statement of faith. Margaret Geracaris and Kurt Humke shared church memories. Also in attendance was Pastor Larry Davis who served from 1976-1979.

Many people were responsible for making this happy celebration a success. The consistory members included Lois Timmler, Roger Schwarze, Ruth Fravert, Margaret Geracaris and Kurt Humke. The 150th Anniversary Committee included the consistory members along with Carole Toburen, Crystal Trunkel and Tina Zimmer.

The committee offered these words of thanks, “A sincere appreciation and thanks to everyone who helped in the planning, preparation and work for this celebration. We thank the individuals who offered generous help and financial support to make our celebration a meaningful one. Thanks to our former ministers and their families, our relatives, friends and visitors for your willingness to come and help us celebrate this special occasion.”
